What plants work best around a swimming pool?
Plants with low debris drop, non-invasive roots, and tolerance for heat, humidity and reflected light. Evergreen screening shrubs, ornamental grasses, dwarf hollies, agapanthus and compact evergreens perform well around pools in the Southeast, while heavy fruit-dropping, thorny and aggressively rooting species are best kept well away from the deck.
Choose plants by behaviour, not just appearance
- Low debris - avoid heavy flower, fruit and needle drop near the water
- Contained roots - keep aggressive species away from deck and shell
- Heat and humidity tolerance, including reflected heat off the deck
- Evergreen structure so the space still reads well in winter
- Non-thorny species anywhere near where bare feet travel
Layered planting strategy
Use screening evergreens on the boundary for privacy, mid-height massing to soften deck edges, and low ornamental planting immediately around seating. Repeating a small number of species in larger groups looks more designed and is far easier to maintain than a collection of individual specimens.
Shade that arrives before your grandchildren
On newer lots, structural shade - pergolas, cantilevered covers, large umbrellas - carries the space while trees establish. Position new trees for late-afternoon shade on the west side, and keep them far enough from the pool that mature canopy and roots are not a future problem.
