Saltwater vs Chlorine Pools
The most common misconception first: a saltwater pool is a chlorine pool. It simply makes its chlorine on site instead of having it added by hand.




Is a saltwater pool chlorine-free?
No. A salt chlorine generator passes low-salinity water through an electrolytic cell that converts dissolved salt into chlorine. The sanitizer is still chlorine - it is generated continuously rather than dosed manually, which produces steadier levels and a softer feel, but the water is not chlorine-free.
Practical differences
- Feel - salt water is often described as softer and less harsh on skin and eyes
- Consistency - generated chlorine is steadier than manual dosing
- Routine - fewer chemical deliveries, but cell inspection and cleaning are added
- Up-front cost - a generator and cell add equipment cost
- Replacement - cells are consumable and need periodic replacement
Materials and corrosion
Salt is mildly corrosive over time to some metals, natural stone and certain fixtures. This is manageable with appropriate material selection, proper bonding, sealed stone and rinsing of adjacent surfaces, but it should influence coping, railing and fixture choices at design time rather than being discovered later.
Which to choose
If lower hands-on chemical handling and water feel are priorities and the design accounts for materials, salt is a strong choice. If lowest equipment cost and simplest repair path matter more, traditional chlorine remains perfectly good. Water still needs testing and balancing either way.
